The Perimeter System

4.8· 60 reviews. Rated 4.8 out of 5, read the reviews.

Four Perimeter Sentries and two Indoor Plugs, bought once. The four Sentries ring a property at ground level, one facing each way animals actually come in, and the two plugs hold the rooms they slip into. There is no roof unit in this box. Nothing here mounts on a ridge, a parapet, or a gutter line, so if the problem is birds landing on the roof or on a high ledge, The Complete System is the set to buy instead. This one is for the ground and the rooms behind it, and it costs about 27 percent less than the six units bought on their own.

Four outside, two inside

The ways in are watched, and so are the rooms behind them.

How it works

Three steps. Then forget it.

1

Walk the boundary before you stake anything

Animals use the same few ways in, the gap under the hedge, the run beside the shed, the corner by the compost. Find those first. This set is built around covering routes rather than area, so where the four units go matters more than how many you own.

2

Ring the property with the four sentries

Push each Sentry into the ground facing out at one of those routes. A motion sensor watches a forward cone of about 110 degrees, and when something crosses it the unit answers with high-frequency sound waves and an LED flash for about 30 to 40 seconds, then goes quiet again. Four units placed well means an animal meets a trigger on more than one approach.

3

Plug the two indoor units in

Push one into an outlet in each of the two rooms where you see or hear activity, often the kitchen and the garage or basement. They run continuously from the wall, so there is nothing to charge and nothing to remember.

Why it works

Deters yard birds, crows, rodents, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, and other small animals crossing into a yard, plus rodents, insects, and crawlers indoors.

Four cones, one ring

One Sentry watches one entry point, not a yard, which is exactly why this set carries four of them. Placed one per approach, the cones cover the ways in rather than the middle of the lawn, and the easy routes stop being easy.

There is no roofline product in this box

Said plainly, because it is the one thing that separates this set from the other two. Nothing here mounts on a ridge, a parapet, a gutter, or a high ledge. If pigeons or gulls are landing up top, this set will not reach them and a Complete System is the one to buy.

Triggered by movement, quiet in between

Each Sentry holds silent until something crosses its cone, runs for about 30 to 40 seconds, then goes back to watching. Four units outside does not mean four units running all day, and it is what lets each one live on the panel on its own head.

Two rooms held at the same time

The ring handles the ways in. The two Indoor Plugs handle the rooms rodents and crawlers reach anyway, running quietly from a standard outlet with a soft status light and nothing to maintain.

No poison, no bait, no trap

Nothing is left in the yard to be eaten, stepped in, or washed into a bed. Every unit in the set is designed to help deter by making a route or a room feel unsafe, so the animal chooses to go elsewhere rather than being harmed.

About 27 percent less than the six apart

Four Sentries and an Indoor 2-pack added to the cart on their own come to meaningfully more than this set costs. Buying the coverage in one purchase rather than a unit at a time is the whole point of it.

Four corners and two rooms, done in an afternoon

Ordered the set rather than working out what to buy piece by piece. Six units turned up in the one box. Four went in around the fence line, one facing each way the rabbits were coming through, and the two plugs went in the kitchen and the garage. It took an afternoon and I have not had to think about it since.

Bought it because we have no roof problem

We looked at all three sets. Nothing has ever landed on our roof, it is all rabbits and squirrels coming in off the field at the back, so paying for a spinner made no sense. This one is the four ground units and the indoor pair, which is what we needed and nothing we did not.

Good set, plan the placement first

The units are the easy part. Working out the four spots took me two evenings of standing at the window watching where they actually came in. Two of my first guesses were wrong. Once I moved them onto the real routes it started doing its job. Do the watching before you stake anything.

Cheaper than the way I was going to do it

I had a cart with three sentries and the indoor pair in it, and the set came out lower than that with a fourth unit included. Buying the ring in one go was the obvious call once I put the two side by side.

Fine on the ground, nothing for the gulls

It does what it says on the lawn and the back rooms are quieter. What I did not think through is the gulls on our roof, which this set does not touch at all. That is on me, the page is clear about it, but I am now buying a spinner separately. If you have both problems, get one of the Complete Systems.

Nothing to wire around the whole boundary

There is no outlet within thirty meters of our back fence, so four solar units was the only way this was ever going to work. They have been out through a wet spring and are still going. I wipe the panels down every few weeks and that seems to be the whole of the maintenance.

How many do I need?

Match it to your space.

Ground level only

This set as it comes

Four Sentries around the boundary and two plugs inside covers a typical property where the problem is at ground level. If the roof has never been the issue, you are not paying for a unit you will never mount.

Long fence line or a corner lot

Add a sentry or two

Four cones ring a typical yard. A long boundary, a deep lot, or a second street frontage gives animals more ways in than four units can watch, so keep the set as the base and add single Sentries for the approaches it leaves open.

Birds on the roof, gutters, or high ledges

Buy a Complete System instead

Nothing in this box goes up high. The Complete System carries the Rooftop Spinner for the ridge line along with one yard stake and the same indoor pair, and The Complete System Pro carries the Spinner with two Perimeter Sentries instead of that stake. If birds are landing above you rather than crossing the lawn, one of those two is the set that fits.

FAQ

Good questions.

What exactly comes in the set?

Four Perimeter Sentries with their pole sections and ground stakes, and a two-pack of Indoor Plugs. Six units in total, four for the ground outside and two for rooms inside.

Is there anything in this set for the roof?

No. There is no roof, ridge, parapet, or ledge unit in this box, and nothing in it is designed to be mounted up high. If pigeons or gulls are landing on your roof or gutters, buy The Complete System instead. It carries the Rooftop Spinner for exactly that.

How is this different from the two Complete Systems?

The roofline, and the number of sentries. This set is four Perimeter Sentries and two Indoor Plugs, all of it at ground level and indoors. Both Complete Systems carry the Rooftop Spinner instead, so they reach the ridge line but watch the yard with less: the standard one with a single IonAway Yard Guardian, the Pro with two Perimeter Sentries. Pick by where your problem actually is. If it is on the roof, you want a Complete System. If the whole boundary is being crossed and the roof is fine, you want this one.

How much less is it than buying the units separately?

About 27 percent. Four Sentries and an Indoor 2-pack added to the cart on their own come to meaningfully more than the set costs, which is the reason to buy the coverage in one go rather than a unit at a time.

Where should the four sentries go?

Think in routes, not in area. Walk the boundary and find where animals actually cross in, the gap under the hedge, the run beside the shed, the fence corner, the compost end. Stake one facing each, with nothing solid between the sensor and the route. Each unit watches a forward cone of about 110 degrees and reaches up to about 6 to 8 m in open conditions, so one unit is one entry point rather than a yard.

Do the sentries need an outlet or batteries?

Neither. Each one charges from the panel on its own head through daylight hours and runs from its built-in rechargeable battery. There is nothing to wire and nothing to bury. Give each unit somewhere that gets real sun for a good part of the day, because sunlight is the only thing that charges it.

Will animals get used to it?

They can, and we are not going to promise otherwise. Any static deterrent can fade into the background once an animal decides nothing follows it. Running four units helps, because an animal meets a trigger on more than one approach rather than learning to walk around a single one, and moving a unit to a new spot every few weeks keeps the pattern from becoming predictable.

Will I be able to hear the outdoor units?

Some people may hear part of a trigger cycle from close by, and sensitivity varies from person to person and with age. Point each unit out toward the boundary rather than back at the house, and keep them away from open windows, seating areas, and the paths you walk. If one spot turns out to be uncomfortable, move that unit further out.

Can the sentries stay out in the rain?

Yes. Each one is rated IP44, which means rain and splash resistant. They are not submersible and should not be pressure washed. Avoid spots that puddle, and try not to aim a sprinkler straight at a sensor. The Indoor Plugs are for indoor outlets only.

Is it safe around children and pets?

There is no poison, no bait, and no trap anywhere in the set, so there is nothing outside to be eaten or stepped in. Dogs and cats hear higher frequencies than people do, so keep the outdoor units away from a dog run and place the indoor units out of the rooms where small caged animals live. Watch how your animals behave over the first few days.

How soon will I see a difference?

Most people watching specific routes see activity on those routes ease over the first week or two, and indoor activity tends to fade across the same period. Watch where the activity moves to. If it moves up onto the roof rather than off the property, that is a Complete System problem rather than one this set can solve.

Is the roofline part of it?

This set stops at ground level. The Complete System Pro adds the Rooftop Spinner for the ridge, parapet, or ledge, and keeps the ground and the rooms covered with two Perimeter Sentries and the same pair of Indoor Plugs.

Roof trouble, one way in?

Four ways in is what this set is built for. If the roof is the real problem and the yard has a single spot animals use, The Complete System covers the ridge with the Spinner and holds that spot with an IonAway Yard Guardian, plus the same two plugs.
